Updated: Jul 31, 2018

Lance Cpl. Deraps of Jamestown, Mo., signed up for the Marines when he was 17 and left for basic training shortly after graduating in 2005 from Jamestown C-1 High School. He was excited about serving his country and he will always be remembered for that and as a young man who had the potential to be a great leader. In March 2005, Leon was inducted as an Eagle Scout through California, MO. Boy Scout Troop 120, in which he had been a member of since he was young. He was described as one of the best Eagle Scouts and was an outstanding example of manhood and what it meant to be a good person. He was the kind of guy that would help anyone and it didn't matter if they were his friend or not. In addition to serving in the Boy Scouts, Deraps played on the Jamestown Eagles baseball team all fours years in high school, he played on the basketball team for a couple of years, he was an FFA member and he was elected prom king during his senior year. He was respectful, polite, and kind. He is the son of Dale and Sandy Deraps, Jamestown. He died conducting combat operations while serving in Iraq at age 19.
